Kalamazoo FC opened up its National Premier Soccer League schedule with a 5-0 win over FC Indiana on a very wet Friday night at Mayors Riverfront Park.
Kalamazoo FC scored four second half goals in a 5-0 rout against FC Indiana. Four different players scored for KZFC on Friday night and the teams offense looked to be in full force.
KZFC put pressure on the defense of FC Indiana right from the kickoff. KZFC were creating lots of chances but could not find the back of the net until the 30 minute. Cam Sipple put in a corner kick that bounced around on the wet surface before Janum Sailor controlled the ball to poked it past the goalie to open the scoring at 1-0.
KZFC controlled the ball for most of the fist half and finished the half with 10 shots and nine corner kicks. FC Indiana had only one shot and one corner kick at halftime.
At the start of the second half FC Indiana put a little more pressure on KZFC by using a somewhat effective counter attack. Both teams went back and forth early in the second half until KZFC took full control of the game on another corner kick.
“I think it took us awhile to build a connection but we wore them down and they got fatigue,” said coach Brian Clements. “We started to play the right balls in and the timing was right going into the box.”
In the 69 minute Feliz Dawson from FC Indiana was shown is second yellow card and then shown red as Indiana had to play with 10 men for the last 20 minutes of the game.
Within minutes KZFC made FC Indiana pay for the red card and added another goal when Jeo Garcia forced a turnover about 30 yards out and ripped a shot into the right side of the goal to give KZFC a four goal lead. Following the goal in the 77th minute Plainwell standout and Oakland University commit Luke Morrell subbed in for his first ever KZFC minutes.
“Overall it was an improvement but we still have some little things to work on,” said Garcia. “Tonight was just another day for us to get better.”
KZFC added icing on the cake when Garcia scored his second goal of the night in the 87 minute. Dylan Fillwock found a streaking Garcia on a breakaway and he calmly passed it into the goal to finish the scoring for KZFC and give them a 5-0 lead.
KZFC finished the game with 20 shots, 11 shots on goal and 13 corner kicks as the offense was in full force. FC Indiana finished with four shots, one shot on goal and one corner kick. KZFC won the game 5-0 and started their NPSL schedule with a victory at home.
Carson Brinks was named the Cornerstone Construction Hardworking Man of the Match for his hard work playing outside back. He put in a dominate defensive work to help solidify the clean sheet for goalkeeper Beau Prey and drove the ball up the wing to spark the offensive attack.
KZFC will be at home on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. when they face off against Force FC in the first round of the Michigan Milk Cup.
