Kalamazoo FC ended its season as they always do with an end of the year banquet at Shakespeare’s Pub in downtown Kalamazoo. Fans and players were able to get together one last time and look back at the season and give out team awards.
It was a great event as always with all of the players in attendance including the reserve players. Season ticket holders and general fans also enjoyed the party talking to their favorite players. The players said their last goodbyes as some of them head to their receptive colleges to start their collegiate soccer season.
Team owner, Mike Garret, hosted the event and started off the ceremonies thanking the fans, players and staff for their help throughout the season. Head coach Brian Clements and assistant coaches Jake Puente and Todd Wills also spoke about the season. Finally came the team awards to distribute. KZFC gives out awards to the offensive and defensive player of the year, coaches player of the year and the supporter award which season ticket holders get to vote on their most valuable player of the year.
The offensive player of the year could have been won by many players on the team. Four players were tied for the leading scorer on the team with four goals, Cameron Sipple lead the team in assist with six and Janum Sailor lead the team in total points with 13. The team voted Janum Sailor as the offensive player of the year as he lead the team in total points and was also tied for leading scorer on the team.
The defensive player of the year award was also a very tough decision. KZFC has many strong defenders throughout the year with Carson Brinks, Jordan Veillette, Cameron Sipple, Dylan Fillwock and JD Nord playing most of the minutes on defense. However, the team voted Cameron Sipple as the defensive player of the year. In addition to Sipples outstanding defense, he also led the team in assists with six.
The next award given was the coaches award which is an award given to the player who the coach believes has showed overall excellence, outstanding performance, leadership and effort and commitment. Nick King was awarded this award because of his outstanding play throughout the entire season and his ability to play any position coach put him in. King worked tirelessly to ensure the team was on the right track.
The last award that was given was the supporters award. This award is voted on by the season ticket holders and is given to the player that the fans think is the most valuable player on the team. This award was given to Jordan Veillette who started almost every game for KZFC at center back and was a wall on defense in every game of the season.
KZFC finished in fifth place in the Great Lakes Conference of the National Premier Soccer League and were knocked out of the Michigan Milk Cup in the semi-finals. KZFC finished the NPSL season with a 4-5-3 record and an overall record of 8-6-3. The team started off well and only lost once in their first eight games. KZFC also finished the season on a good note winning their last three games. KZFC found a lot of success during the season and will continue to grow as a club in the years to come.
