Kalamazoo FC is proud to announce the signing of Kalamazoo native and midfielder Ryan Melgar.
Ryan is a midfielder with great control of the ball. He played for Portage Northern High School and club with TKO which is now Midwest United. Melgar played under Coach Clements during his time at Midwest United and knows Clements extremely well.
After his time in high school, Melgar continued his soccer career at Kalamazoo College with former Kalamazoo FC head coach Shabazz. During his freshman season at K-College, Melgar was a force to be reckoned with. He finished with a team high six goals, including four game winners and 12 points on the year. Melgar also received awards for All-MIAA First Team and MIAA’s newcomer of the year.
He attended K-College for only one season before transferring to Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. Melgar now plays at Wheaton College with Kalamazoo FC teammate Hasten Biddlecome. Melgar will be a great addition to the team in the midfield and knows how to keep the ball. He is a very technical player and knows what to do with the ball at his feet.
Two Question Q/A
Q – What has your off-season been like?
A – My off-season keeps me pretty busy. Between classes, lifting, practice, taking care of my body, and Fortnite I don’t really have much time for anything else. But I love the sport in addition the life it gives me and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
A – Can you talk about your college soccer experience and what your plans are of the future?
Q – My college soccer experience has been a little weird because I only spent one semester at Kalamazoo College, then decided to transfer out for both athletic and moral reason, and now I am at Wheaton College. I’ve already become really close with the team and fit into the style of play pretty well. Going forward I will see where the game takes me, and if an opportunity to continue playing after college comes up, then I would definitely look into taking it.
