The third goalkeeper to sign for the 2018 season is local standout and WMU keeper Elijah Michaels. Fans will remember Michaels from our inaugural season in 2016 when he rotated with player/coach Beau Prey.
Currently entering his senior year with WMU, Elijah had a exceptional game against NCAA power house and conference rival Akron. With a season high of 5 saves, he notched a clean sheet, helped his team earn 1-0 win and was named MAC Player of the Week. That win would end up being the decider for the Broncos becoming the regular season MAC Champions. One of many honors the WMU program achieved in the 2017 season.
Elijah grew up playing club soccer for TKO and Mattawan High School. With Mattawan he was named 1st team all state, 3rd team all state and Kalamazoo Gazette Player of the Year.
2 Questions Q/A
Q – Whats has your off-season been like?
A – My off season has had several stages. The first couple weeks after our tournament run had ended, I took time off of any activity to rest up physically and mentally from the season itself, as well as finish up the semester in the classroom. After the semester had ended, I gradually made my way back into the weight room to stay fit over the holiday break while enjoying the time off to relax with family. Then as the spring semester was approaching I got the gloves back on, and kicked around with a few guys to mentally prep for team training to start back up with the start of classes. Overall, its been a relaxing and rejuvenating off season for me.
Q – What are you most looking forward to in rejoining Kalamazoo FC?
A – I’m extremely excited to rejoin the teal and purple this summer. Although I was unable to play last summer, I kept up on the team and enjoyed the season as a fan. This summer, however, I am looking forward to not just being a spectator, but getting the uniform back on and playing in front of the tremendous fan base we have gained. Also, since the inaugural season, there has been a few changes to the look of the team. I am anxious to get together with old, and new, teammates, and staff, to see what we can accomplish this coming summer!
